We are situated on the north eastern side of Rarotonga situated just out of the main town area. Turn left out of our gate and main town Avarua is a short 6 mins drive. Turn right out of the gate and Muri beach the most popular beach for swimming is an 8 min drive away. The airport is an approx 10 mins drive.
While these destinations appear close enough to walk to, I suggest if you don’t have a vehicle you should catch the bus. Remember we don’t have footpaths, the roads are narrow, plus there are the dogs on the way not to mention the heat.
The bus travels clockwise around the island on the hour and anti clockwise on the half hour and stops right outside our gate. I do recommend that visitors take a bus drive just to familiarize themselves with the island.
Right outside out front door and across the road is the Ooa sea channel. This is a great place for reef fishing and it is where the locals surf. We also have the whales visiting – they appear during the season July to October in the early hours of the morning and in the late evenings. It is not unusual to hear and see them playing and frolicking around in the channel.
While I don’t recommend you swim in the channel there is a lovely sandy spot where one may cool off. And where you will spot lots of lagoon fish.
The beach is also excellent for shell collecting. You may take shells out of the country as long as you have a sites certificate from the Environment Dept.
From the lodges you have an excellent view of our mountain rage. The trail to Mount
Te Kou our highest mountain is located off the back road a short five mins walk from the lodges. The trek to the top of this mountain takes approx five hours it is a steep track, slippery when wet but the panoramic views from the peak are fantastic. You will need decent shoes for this trek. Otherwise there is a walk that is not too strenuous that takes you inland to the local water intake.
Arei Te Tonga Marae is an ancient historical site which is located on the back road and is a short walk away from the lodges.
